Gemma was established in 1978 in the Barolo region by Silvano Piacentini, overseeing approximately 26 hectares of vineyards spread across several Langhe municipalities, including Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba, and La Morra. Today, the estate is managed by Silvano's son Luigi, alongside oenologist and agronomist Giorgio Barbero, who supervises all aspects of production.
Castiglione del Falletto commune, often considered the heart of Barolo, is uniquely positioned as one of only three townships situated entirely within the denomination's boundaries, encircled by the region's other ten communes. Being right at the geographical centre of Barolo is somewhat reflected in the wines which display incredible balance and poise.
For their Barolo del Comune di Castiglione Falletto, Gemma employs traditional vinification methods, including a four-week maceration period to maximize polyphenol extraction, ensuring the wine's longevity. The aging process spans 24 months in both Slavonian oak and 5-hectoliter French tonneaux.
This delicate yet structured wine displays remarkable aromatic and flavour persistence. Its initial primary bright red berry fruit aromas evolve into a complex bouquet featuring notes of aniseed, tar, and rosewater also, perfectly balanced by vibrant acidity and refined tannins.
