Domaine Matrot is a renowned winery situated in the picturesque Burgundy village of Meursault, nestled in the heart of the Cote de Beaune. The estate's rich history dates back to the early 20th century when it was established by Joseph and Marguerite Matrot. Since its inception, it has remained a cherished family enterprise, passed down through generations of the Matrot family, boasting an impressive 23 hectares (56 acres) of vineyards spread across several prestigious appellations, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie, and Maranges.
In a commitment to sustainable viticulture, the estate began transitioning to organic practices in 1976, culminating in the full adoption of organic cultivation methods across all their vineyards by the year 2000.
One of the domaine's notable offerings is their Monthélie, crafted from Pinot Noir grapes harvested from vines averaging 60 years in age. The vineyard that produces this Monthélie is uniquely positioned on a steep, shallow hillside with a south-eastern exposure, situated between the renowned villages of Meursault and Volnay. This terroir contributes to low yields and imparts distinctive characteristics to the wine.
Tasting notes for the Monthélie reveal a concentrated wine brimming with aromas of red fruits. On the palate, it offers notes of juicy black berries complemented by supple tannins, resulting in an elegant, velvety texture. Perfect for pairing with grilled poultry, rib of beef, and barbecues. Notably, the mid-palate and finish are particularly excellent, contributing to the wine's overall appeal and complexity.
