Herdade do Esporao have been producing wines in the heart of the Alentejo (180km south of Lisbon) since 1987 - and were awarded the prestige "Winery of the Year" early in 2009 for their hard work in 2008, which they also won in 2003.
The grapes come from vines aged 15 to 25 years, grown in well-draining schist and granite soils with sandy loam texture. The winemaking process begins with hand-harvested grapes fermented in small concrete tanks. Aging then occurs in French oak barrels, with 30% in 5000-liter vessels and 70% in 500-liter barrels, for a total of one year. This is followed by a minimum of two years of bottle aging.
This Alicante Bouschet boasts a complex bouquet featuring black plum, dark chocolate, and subtle leather aromas. Its robust tannic structure is balanced by rich fruit flavours and a lingering, spicy finish.
This versatile wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled and roasted red meats, pizza and pasta, casseroles and stews, both mild creamy and mature strong cheeses. It also complements barbecue, teriyaki, and grilled vegetable dishes..
