Gómez Cruzado, a winery with roots dating to 1886, was founded by Angel Gómez de Arteche in Haro, the heart of Rioja Alta. Its location, just 100 meters from the Haro train station, was strategic during the era of bustling wine trade between Rioja and France along the Tudela-Bilbao railway.
In 1916, Angel and Jesus Gomez Cruzado acquired the winery, which later passed to the Baños family. Today, winemaker Juan Bautista Sáenz crafts wines from old bush vines in the elevated areas of Rioja Alta and Alavesa. He sources grapes from nearly 100 plots across three distinct regions: Alto Najerilla, Bajo Najerilla, and Sierra Cantabria.
The Sierra Cantabria area, straddling Rioja Alta and Alavesa, is particularly noteworthy. Here, vines thrive in poor, white, chalky-clay soils on sunny slopes up to 750 meters in altitude. This unique terroir, where Mediterranean and Atlantic climates converge, produces wines known for their freshness and elegance.
This Rioja Crianza offers a bouquet of plum and bramble aromas with subtle umami and spicy notes. This approachable Crianza presents warm, gentle flavours of dark fruits complemented by supple tannins. The long finish develops additional toasty and savoury hints.
