Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a distinctive red wine from south-eastern Sicily, primarily produced around the town of Vittoria in the provinces of Ragusa, Caltanissetta, and Catania. It holds the distinction of being Sicily's only DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) wine, the highest level in Italian wine classification, which means very strict yields of less than 52 hectolitres per hectare (roughly equivalent to only 6900 bottles per year).
The name "Cerasuolo" derives from the Italian word for cherry, reflecting both the wine's colour and flavour profile. While the wine has a long history in the region, it received DOC status in 1973 and was elevated to DOCG in 2005.
Made by blending two indigenous Sicilian grape varieties: Nero d'Avola (50-70%), which provides body, structure, and dark fruit flavours, and Frappato (30-50%), which adds aromatic qualities, lightness, and freshness the result is a medium-bodied wine with bright acidity, displaying flavours of red fruits like cherries and strawberries, often complemented by herbal, earthy, or floral notes.
Tasting notes: Ruby red colour, with violet nuances. On the nose, there are notes of morello cherries, and caramel. The palate is mouth-filling, with excellent structure, soft tannins and a long finish. A very versatile wine, it goes well with light meat dishes, tuna and baked fish. Serve slightly chilled
