The Alto Alentejo region, nestled a two-hour drive inland from Lisbon, boasts a rich viticultural heritage dating back to Roman times. This high-quality wine-producing area is characterized by a diverse landscape with a predominantly flat topography, punctuated by occasional hills, and a climate that is mostly Mediterranean, with some areas exhibiting continental characteristics.

Established in 2004, Terra d' Alter emerged from a strategic alliance between two local farming enterprisesa partnership that was further enriched by the expertise of renowned Australian 'Flying Winemaker' Peter Bright. These days Terra d'Alter wines are made under the guidance of award winning oenologist Susana Esteban.

Telhas is crafted from 100% Viognier grapes, sourced exclusively from the Antas vineyard's upper ridge, where the Viognier is cultivated, which is believed to be the site of an ancient Roman villa, evidenced by scattered terracotta fragments known locally as 'Telhas' (Portuguese for roof tiles).

The grapes grown on the austere granitic soils are hand-harvested and undergo a two-day skin contact period after crushing. Fermentation takes place in new oak barrels, followed by 11 months of lees aging, mirroring traditional Condrieu methods.

Tasting notes: Vibrant notes of apricots and greengage plum, accented by subtle toasty vanilla leading to a full-bodied palate, echoing the nose's fruit profile and balanced by refreshing acidity and a slight grip on the finish that complements the rich fruit character. Further bottle aging will help the wine to fully express its complexity.
