José Antonio Cañada Gil, affectionately known as 'Pepe', resides in a remote corner of the world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life. His domain is a granite-sculpted landscape, with breathtaking views across the river to the mountains of Portugal's Peneda-Gerês National Park. This enchanting location has caught the eye of renowned winery Vega Sicilia, who are establishing a new cellar and acquiring vineyards in the area—though José cheekily notes that the best plots remain his.
José tends to 5 hectares spread across 23 plots surrounding his childhood village of Crecente, where his family still resides. His radiant smile and generous spirit reflect the joy he's found in his vocation as a winemaker. While viticulture has long been a family tradition, José pioneered bottling under his own label, Terras do Sur, in 2016.
The region's terroir is predominantly granitic with sandy and clay soils, ideal for cultivating the local Albariño grapes. José's 100% Albariño wine is crafted from vines grown in granitic sandy soil over granite bedrock. The winemaking process involves direct pressing followed by natural fermentation in stainless steel tanks, where the wine rests on fine lees for six months.
Albariño Terras Do Sur boasts intense floral and fruity aromas. It's a balanced and elegant wine with complex and intriguing notes. This versatile white pairs excellently with seafood dishes, particularly octopus, lobster, and crayfish, as well as various white fish preparations.
